Fire extinguishers

Guide to our fire extinguishers

We at FirecellUk have fire extinguishers to suit all needs whether it is for your office, warehouse, home, car, caravan or boat.
Extinguishers are divided up in classes (A,B,C,D and F). These classes reflect which type of fire extinguisher is to be used on any type of fire.
The main types of fire extinguishers are Water(Class A), Foam(Class A and B), Carbon Dioxide(Class B),Powder(Class A, B and C), Wet Chemical(ClassF)- note powder extinguishers do leave a large residue when used and can damage equipment located nearby. For more specialized extinguishers see our automatic range under our specialized extinguisher tab.
Class A is fires involving wood, paper and textiles.
Class B is fires involving flammable liquids such as petrols, diesel or oils.
Class C is fires involving gasses.
Class D is fires involving metals.
Class F is fires involving cooking oils such as in deep-fat fryers.
Note that there is no Class E and no Class for electrical fires. All fires involving electrical fires should be tackled with a Carbon Dioxide(CO2)fire extinguisher. CO2 extinguishers carry a Class B rating so it is suitable for fires involving flammable liquids. Please note that it is note safe to fight fires involving aerosols with fire extinguishers.
The location of fire extinguishers is very important. All fire extinguishers should be visable and have easy access. They should be located close to fire exits and entrances to buildings. The appropriate fire extinguisher should be located near the hazard so it can be safely used. All extinguishers should be place on dedicated stands or on wall mounted brackets(see our stand section). It is advised that fire extinguishers should be hung no higher than waist level to the operating handle.
Since 1997 all extinguishers are red. This is to fall in line with European Standards(EN3). They all sill have a small colour- coded area at the top to denote the type. Each extinguisher should have clear instructions on the safe use. It is reccomended that staff should be trained in the used of extinguishers and general fire safety awareness and what to do in the event of a fire. At firecelluk we can carry out Marshall training, just call our team for further advice.
There are many different types of extinguishers which come in various sizes. Under our “which extinguisher” tab you can use our table to gauge which model your require for your office or home.
Fire extinguishers have been around for many decades and will certainly be around for many more. One thing is for sure is that we will always be at risk of fire, and that is fact! In saying that what we can do is to protect ourselves against any fire hazards as far as possible. The law and fire regulations set out in the Fire Safety Order of 2005 will help us to understand the safety measures we need to adopt but in the end it is always up to the individual to act on any fire risks that could be regarded as a potential fire hazard. Whether you are a business owner or for personal use fire extinguishers will always be needed to contain a fire and put a fire out.
You may wonder that if you were involved in a fire situation then you would act quickly and leave a building as soon as possible. This would be the correct thing to do. If you look at it from another angle- ask yourself if you were on an floor area and the fire was below you and the fire escape is blocked by a fire how will you escape? Maybe you will need an extinguisher to clear an escape route or keep the fire at bay untill the fire brigade come to the rescue.
All in all fire extinguishers are not just there to fight a fire , they may be required to assist any escape.
As like any safety mechanism fire extinguishers should be serviced by a competant engineer on an annual basis up to BS 5306 part 3 2009. If you require this to be carried out we have qualified engineers whop can carry out this service for you and guide you on any further requirements. Just call our team if you require any assistance on fire extinguisher servicing.
